United Airlines suffer a bird strike

United Airlines A-319 on short-final suffer bird strike

United's originated flight 2182 departed Chicago's O'Hare (ORD) Airport hub on time at 14:01 CT, heading for a 799-mile flight to LaGuardia (LGA) Airport in New York. The flight overall was routine, with the aircraft heading towards an on-time arrival.

The Airbus A-319 with 124 passengers and six crew on board was struck by a bird on a short-final to LaGuardia on Runway 22.

The bird impacted the nose of the aircraft; however, it did not affect the airplane's ability to complete landing procedures safely. It arrived on Runway 22 before disembarking passengers at Gate 45 on time at 17:22 ET.

The only damage noted on the United Airlines aircraft, registration N829UA, upon arrival in New York was a dent in the nose of the airplane. Mechanics at LaGuardia worked to remove the blemish from the plane, and it was ultimately returned to service about 20 hours later for a flight to Newark Liberty (EWR) Airport at 14:14 the next day.

The good news from the bird strike was that it occurred late in the flight and did not impact passengers landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York. The aircraft was still able to arrive on time. However, the passengers using the same airplane the next day for a flight to Newark Liberty Airport experienced a 44-minute delay.
